ISBE Civics Mandate Guidance

The ISBE Mandate Guidance Documents were created to support educators as they determine what content is mandated by the State of Illinois. They are supplemental to other resources put out by the Illinois State Board of Education, including the School Code and Graduation Guidance Documents.

Cross-Curricular Inquiry Posters

The Inquiry Process Posters illustrate the stages of the inquiry process by using the statements in each step as suggested steps for each stage of the process.  The intention is to support teachers with the goal of engaging students in the inquiry process.

This kit is a collection of resources and ideas to support educators as they create units of inquiry aligned to the Illinois Social Science Standards.

K-12 Social Science Inquiry Process Graphic

The inquiry graphic illustrates the stages of the inquiry process and is a guide to a suggested process for incorporating  the Illinois Learning Standards for Social Science, particularly the Inquiry Skills portion of the standards. The statements contained in the graphic are suggested steps for each stage of the process.  The intention is to support teachers with the goal of engaging students in the inquiry process.

K-12 Analyzing Social Science Sources

Rather than students glancing through sources or having someone telling them what sources reveal, students should be challenged to become better equipped to analyze sources and come to their own conclusions. These grade banded packets include tools that can provide educators assistance in helping students analyze a variety of documents important to the Illinois Social Science Standards.

K-5 Children’s Literature Connections to the Illinois Social Science Learning Standards

Each grade level packet provides a list of potential children’s books that may assist teachers with connections to the Illinois Social Science Standards. Of course, just reading a book does not teach a standard. However, these books can be used to reinforce the learning standard they are connected to by: introducing a lesson, unit or concept, supplementing a lesson or unit, or providing additional information for specific topics/standards.

The Implementation Guide contains two main categories—Classroom Implementation Components describing what the phases of implementation look like in the classroom and District Implementation Components describing what the phases of implementation look like at the school/district level.

Illinois Social Science Learning Standards

The Illinois Social Science Learning Standards were adopted in January of 2016 for implementation to begin during the 2017-2018 school year. These documents are located on the Illinois State Board of Education Social Science website but can also be found below for your convenience.
